The Edifying Story of Li Guoxing

This story is about Li Guoxing, a Chinese shepherd who had a face transplant in 2006, and to a lesser extent, about his donor. It interweaves thoughts about facial traumas and attempted repairs.

Li Guoxing’s case involved numerous arrangements such as orthopaedic procedures, moulding techniques from the fine arts, Asian theatre, and press releases. These arrangements raise questions regarding the uniqueness of the portrait. The donor remains an added element impossible to integrate.

However, with these grafts, randomness has taken over because of risks of rejection and availabilities of grafts.

From this point of view, the story of Li Guoxing gives a new power to the random component of a portrait, a component that Otto Dix already expressed in his painting The Skat Players (1920).
