Presentation

Documens is an editorial program using a promotional text extract from the first issue of the magazine Documents, 1929, created by Georges Bataille, Pierre d’Espezel and the publisher Georges Wildenstein. The multidisciplinary headings of Documents were: Doctrines, Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Ethnology. Variétés was added unto the fourth issue and onwards while Doctrines disappeared. [1]



[1] The collection includes 15 issues numbered 1 to 7, 1929; and 1 to 8; 1930. Documents re-appeared in 1933, 3rd Series No.1; and in 1934, 4th Series No.1. Dr. John Babelon, Dr. G. Conteneau, Carl Einstein, Pierre d’Espezel, Raymond Lantier, Paul Pelliot, Dr. Rivet, Georges-Henri Rivière, Joseph Strzygowski, Georges Wildenstein were part of the editorial board since its establishment. George Bataille was secretary general and Michel Leiris was its editorial secretary.
